Voices in Action — Academic Arts-Integrated Residency

Voices In Action

Voices In Action is a 24-session arts-integrated residency that uses powerful music — including the era that transformed the world in the 1960s–70s, through today — to teach students about the past and present. This program transforms music into a gateway for critical thinking and personal growth.

Students analyze lyrics, themes, and context, connecting what they hear to historical events, current issues, and their own lived experiences. Through this process, they strengthen literacy, critical thinking skills, research, and civic awareness while engaging creatively through music, art, and technology.

Music reflects the world in which it is created. By studying the messages within the music, students gain a deeper understanding of how ideas and lived experiences shape the world over time. This approach bridges the gap between traditional learning and real-world application, helping students navigate life with a broader perspective and a stronger voice.

How It Works

Each session follows a purposeful structure that bridges history, music, and personal growth:

1. Guided Analysis Sessions center on guided listening and analysis of music and media from various eras and cultural contexts. Participants explore lyrical themes and societal influences while developing connections between what they hear, historical events, and their own lived experiences.

2. Collaborative Dialogue: Participants engage in a structured discussion to explore how music reflects the world around them. This dialogue strengthens communication skills and helps individuals connect classroom or community learning to real-world challenges.

3. Culminating Showcase: The program culminates in a participant-driven project where individuals create expressive work—such as lyrics, spoken word, poetry, or multimedia presentations. These projects allow participants to share their unique perspectives in a final showcase, demonstrating their ability to navigate life with a stronger, more informed voice.
